Singles and Couples All Dance

In Modern Square Dancing there are no set square dance calls or patterns for a dance. The dancers learn a number of square dance moves which the caller then calls together with square dance music. The caller calls out these moves to the dancers and the dancers follow the calls. The dancers do not know which square dance moves will be called next. Usually all dancers move together, although some calls are executed by just four people.

Modern square dancing is set up with three common levels of Square dance expertise before moving onto an advanced level. All Square dance levels are fun and easier to learn than what you would first expect. The first basic level is followed by mainstream which then leads into the plus level. By the time you reach the mainstream and plus levels you are able to attend square dances around the world. There are four other advanced levels called A1, A2,C1,C2.

You Should Probably Try a Square Dance or Two

It's time to erase the old image you might have of square dancing from your school days or TV. Today's dancing is done to great music from the best of modern music, including Country, Rock, Pop, Gospel, Hip-Hop, Celtic and Bluegrass.

If You Can Walk,
You Can Square Dance

In squares of eight across the country, people from senior-citizen age on down into the teens are linking arms, sashaying, and "do-s-doing" themselves to longer, healthier, and happier lives. With all its moving, twisting, and turning, square dancing provides more than the daily dose of heart- and bone-healthy physical activity. Remembering all the calls -- from "do-s i-do" to 'allemande' -- keeps the mind sharp, potentially staving off age-related memory loss, experts say.

Square dancing offers regular companionship that is an antidote to depression and loneliness, a statement confirmed by square-dancing advocates everywhere. It becomes a social form of exercise. "Square dancing is kind of unique in that it involves touching hands -- we turn, we swing, and that seems to bring us closer together. It is fun put to movement.

Dancing Keeps You Young

A typical evening is about two hours dancing up to six tips or more. A tip includes what is called “hash calling”,where the caller calls out some moves, which the dancers execute in smooth, choreographed routines -- and a "singing call," which can include all types of square-dance moves timed to fit popular songs.

Today's modern square dancing music is much hipper than what you see in the movies. On any given evening, dancers will twirl across the floor to the music of John Denver's "Take Me Home, Country Road," the Bee Gee's "Stay in' Alive," Donna Summer's "She Works Hard for the Money," as well Celtic music, rock and roll, the blues and songs by the Beatles and Elvis Presley and more.

Do not underestimate yourself square dancing is not as complex as it looks. You learn one move at a time and just do it. You learn with others and go with it. Laughter fun and movement grows with each level.
